TUTOR TRAINING COURSE

The goal of this Moodle tutor training course is to train motivated students with a high level of English to effectively tutor ESL to peers who want to improve their skills.  It can be used for autonomous or teacher-directed tutor training. With the STEP Method, it is not necessary to be completely bilingual or an expert grammarian to become a constructive tutor.

The course consists of an overview unit and the following 12 units, which can be completed in approximately four-hours.
  • Unit 1:  Tutoring a Five-Step Lesson
  • Unit 2:  Tutoring Reading
  • Unit 3:  Tutoring Techniques to Help Tutees Use and Understand English
  • Unit 4:  Correcting Oral Errors
  • Unit 5:  Tutoring Grammar
  • Unit 6:  Tutoring Verb Tenses
  • Unit 7:  Tutoring the Simple Present Tense
  • Unit 8:  Tutoring Question Formation
  • Unit 9:  Tutoring Speaking
  • Unit 10: Tutoring Writing
  • Unit 11: Preparing a Lesson
  • Unit 12: Tutoring Review

The units are similar in length with the exception of “Unit 7:  Tutoring the Simple Present Tense,” which provides a model of a five-step lesson and demonstrates how a tutor can help a tutee discover grammar rules on their own.

Each unit consists of objectives, an introduction, a pre-activity (a question to activate prior knowledge), an activity (usually a video based on an authentic tutoring scenario) and a post-activity quiz.

By the end of the Moodle tutor training course, the trained tutor should be able to:
  1. Tutor speaking, reading, writing and grammar lessons.
  2. Apply corrective feedback.
  3. Employ effective tutoring techniques, which will enable tutees to:
    • use and understand English
    • apply reading strategies
    • practice target structures in controlled and authentic situations
    • gain confidence in their own abilities in English
    • use basic grammatical terminology
    • become familiar with the five-step lessons on the STEP website.
