Testimonials

“I really enjoyed the tutor option this semester because it was a challenging new experience that was very different from the regular English class. It allowed me to gain a lot of confidence and communication skills. I think that being a tutor has brought me so much more confidence.

At first, I was very nervous to meet my tutees because I was afraid that I wouldn’t know what to say to them and that it would be awkward. But everything went very well and now, I always look forward to the next lesson with my tutees.

Being a tutor in English has also helped me become a better tutor in other subjects too. For example, in chemistry, I’m way less nervous when I meet my tutee than I was before. Also, I learned to accommodate to the need of the tutee.

My advice for a new tutor would be to have fun and don’t be afraid to try new things and to do new games with your tutees. It’s completely normal to be nervous before meeting your tutees, but just be yourself and everything will go well.” CB

“As I said many times, I LOVED tutoring this semester! Because I had previous experiences with tutoring, it gave me a sense of stability since I was just starting cégep. It also made me feel valued and useful. I have been learning English for the past “I don’t even know how long”!

I remember that I used to translate these famous celebrities’ songs like Selena Gomez’s or Katy Perry’s, or when I watched these cartoons in English and I understood absolutely nothing. Now, I’m the one everyone comes to when they need help in this subject! It took me a long time to realize that. Because I had the amazing chance of learning this language at such a young age, it is my number one goal to help others achieve theirs with tutoring.

Therefore, this is why I suggest that any other student that feels comfortable expressing themselves in English should absolutely give a chance to the tutor option. Even if you don’t have past experiences with tutoring, you don’t visualize yourself becoming a teacher one day or you don’t really feel like the “teacher type”, this option does not depend on that! The tutor option is for you if you care about helping others, you want to improve yourself at a personal and an academic level and this program is definitely for you if you love English!” M C-B

“Thanks to this course, I experienced something I’ve never had before, and it was a great experience! I didn’t have the chance to help many students, but at least, I know what it means to tutor someone. I think what I like the most about tutoring is how I need to adapt myself.

Each tutee has a different way of learning, and it is in my responsibility to adjust myself to their needs. For example, for one tutee, remembering a word by giving context could be easier for them to understand than another. In addition, the course has taught me great communication skills that I could use in the future. I will definitely use what I’ve learned when I help my siblings with their homework, especially the 5 STEPS method (Assessment, theory, communicative and controlled exercises, production task and review).

Finally, if I had to give some advice to a new tutor, I think I would say to always be patient with your tutees and have fun while helping them learn. Tutoring is a rewarding experience not just for the tutee, but also for the tutor themself!” GK
